Latin Artist of the Month for September 2019
Juan Luis Guerra, musician, singer-songwriter, producer and one of the most recognized and awarded Dominican artists around the world.
From an early age he showed a special interest in music and guitar. Reaffirmed his vocation decides to study at the National Conservatory of Music of Santo Domingo and then go to Berklee College of Music in Boston, a university that awarded him an Honoris Causa Doctorate years later. He also studied philosophy and literature at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.
After completing his studies, he returns to the Dominican Republic, where he records his first album, “Soplando” (1984) with a group of local musicians and vocalists who would later be known as Juan Luis Guerra and 440. Juan Luis describes his first production as “A fusion of traditional merengue with jazz together with a vocalization in the style of the American vocal group Manhattan Transfer.” The singers of that nascent group were Maridalia Hernández, Mariela Mercado and Roger Zayas-Bazán, who currently remains part of the musical group .
In 1989 he produced his album “I hope it rains coffee”, a creation of social and romantic content that represents the beginning of the international consecration of Guerra, obtaining relevant sales and placing himself in the first position of many Latin American countries, being the most promoted themes the one that gives title to the disc, in addition to “Visa for a Dream” and the Venezuelan folk song “Woman del Callao.”
On December 11, 1990 he presented his next album, “Bachata Rosa,” his first CD release, recognized as the most successful of his career from a commercial point of view, selling more than nine million copies so far, which Juan Luis deserved his first GRAMMY. In this album set in the history of the popular song and rhythm, Guerra made known to the rest of the world the rhythm of bachata, whose diffusion until then was limited to certain spaces of the Dominican territory.
By 1991, Guerra ventures into the Brazilian market with the album “Romance Rosa,” which contains 4 songs from his previous album versioned in Portuguese by Brazilian lyricist Aloysio Reis and Spanish songs from his previous albums with Karen Records.
“Areíto” (1992), his next production, contains themes that, like “The Cost of Life”, show the poor living conditions of many Dominicans and Latin Americans, touching their sensibility and generating a growing identification with their songs. In that album, Guerra, in addition to contestant songs – such as “If Here Out of Oil” (with the participation of Panamanian Rubén Blades) – experiments with musicians of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra to produce the sentimental song “When I Kiss You” in two versions
His next album, “Fogaraté” (1994), had as a spearhead the song “La Cosquillita”, rescuing the folk fast meringue known in the Dominican Republic as “perico ripiao”. He also merged the meringue with the South African soukous on songs such as “Fogaraté” and “El beso de la ciguatera”, sharing on the album with Congolese guitarist Diblo Dibalá.
In 1995 the compilation “Great Successes” goes on sale, generating more than seven million sales around the world.
After four years of record silence, Guerra presents the album “Ni Es Lo mismo Ni Es Igual” (1998) with which he won three awards in 2000 for the first Latin GRAMMY broadcast. With this album Juan Luis consecutively placed the songs “My Computer” and “White Popcorn” in the # 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks list. However, “The Niagara by Bike” was the most popular topic.
On August 31, 2004, Guerra released his first album in six years under the title “For you”, the only album of a totally Christian cut. With this, the artist won two 2005 Billboard Awards, in the Gospel-Pop and Merengue Tropical categories, for the success “Las Avispas”, achieving for the first time that a song wins these two categories.
For this same year, Guerra was awarded the “Special Latin Prize of the Spanish Academy of Music” for his contribution to the music of his country and the Caribbean in the last 20 years.
In January 2006, Juan Luis Guerra appeared on the 60th anniversary of Berklee, along with other artists such as Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock, Michel Camilo and Chiara Civello.
On April 6, 2006, Juan Luis Guerra was honored as Icon of BMI in the thirteenth edition of the BMI Latin Awards as “Latin Composer of the Year”. His compositions have won 14 BMI Latin Awards.
This same year he was invited by Sting to sing with him at his Altos de Chavón concert, La Romana in the Dominican Republic.
2007 was a year of great relevance for the career path. Edit the album “The Key Of My Heart”, possibly the most recognized after “Bachata Rosa” which leads Guerra to win more than 20 awards, including a GRAMMY, five Latin GRAMMY, six Casandra awards, four Billboard awards and two Lo Nuestro Prize that awarded the Artistic Trajectory award, among others.
A relevant point at this time was the recognition of The Latin Recording Academy by naming him Person of the Year, for his valuable contribution to Latin music and his excellent musical career.
On March 16, 2008, he participated in the “Peace Without Borders” concert organized by Juanes on the Colombian border by artists such as Alejandro Sanz, Ricardo Montaner, Carlos Vives, Miguel Bosé, among others.
On April 11, 2008, Juan Luis Guerra was the big winner of the Billboard Awards with seven nominations and three awards. On September 15, 2008 Guerra was named “UNESCO Artist for Peace”.
On February 14, 2009, the Olympic Stadium “Félix Sánchez” in Santo Domingo, the largest stadium in the country where he performed a completely sold out concert for more than 60,000 people, arrives again.
On April 18, 2010, Juan Luis Guerra organized the charity concert “A Song of Hope for Haiti” on the occasion of the earthquake that devastated that country, managing to gather Alejandro Sanz, Juanes, Enrique Iglesias, Luis Fonsi, Jhonny on the same stage Ventura, Milly Quezada and Maridalia Hernández. The purpose of this event was the construction of a children’s hospital, which will be delivered in early 2015. This concert was coordinated by the Sur Futuro Foundation entity responsible for managing the funds and supervision of the construction of the work.
On June 8, 2010, he released the album “A son de Guerra”. The album contains hits like “La Guagua,” “La Calle” (along with Juanes), and “Bachata en Fukuoka,” the first single from this new production, which was placed in the # 1 position on the Hot Latin Tracks charts, Tropical Songs and Latin Pop Airplay Songs by Billboard.
This production takes him on a successful tour of the world, which included his time in Australia, Africa and much of Europe, standing out for his “sold out” presentation at the legendary Royal Albert Hall in London, England, considered one of the most emblematic theaters in the world.
Guerra was also the first host named for the La Pepa concert of the MTV5 chain held in San Fernando, Cádiz, Spain.
In January 2012, the video of his new single “En El Cielo No Hay Hospital”, with Christian content, is released on YouTube. This song belonged to the new musical production of the Dominican “Christian Collection.”
This same year he produces for Juanes the album “Juanes MTV Unplugged” obtaining a GRAMMY as producer of said album.
For April 16, 2013 he releases his first live double album “A Son de Guerra Tour” DVD and CD, extracted from the concert of the same name held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, before more than 50,000 people, debuting in the first position of digital sales in more than 16 countries simultaneously.
His first single extracted, “Frio Frio”, has the participation of Romeo Santos, automatically becoming a radio hit in the main Latin markets. The success of this DVD returns to Juan Luis Guerra & 440 to the world stages, including again by the Dominican Republic in Punta Cana, with a successful full house concert, sharing the stage with Alejandro Sanz.
Through his successful career he has collaborated with artists such as Tony Bennet, Alejandro Sanz, Luis Fonsi, Milly Quezada, Enrique Iglesias, Emmanuel, Juanes, Miguel Bosé, Maná, Diego Torres, Nelly Furtado, among others.
In 2014, preceded by the release of his first single “Your Kisses,” he releases his most recent musical production: Everything Has His Hour, receiving exceptional reception both by his fans around the world, and by the specialized press. The songs “Your Kisses,” “Everything Has Its Time” and “Muchachita Linda.”
Highlights in this album, themes such as “Cookies & Cream” of social content to the rhythm of merengue, “For You Know” a beautiful and novel are and “From Moca to Paris” theme that has the living legend of merengue Johnny Ventura. Another song to highlight is “Canto a Colombia” inspired by the great Colombian people.
With the success of the first single “Your Kisses” begins the tour “Everything Has Your Time Tour” at the beginning of July, with an extraordinary reception in its first European part, leaving the Sold Out sign in cities like Paris, Madrid, Barcelona , The Canary Islands and other locations, appearing before more than 60 thousand people in the main European cities. The same is repeated in Miami, Puerto Rico and New York, with locations sold at full capacity, repeating the feat in Panama, Costa Rica and El Salvador.
Everything Has Its Hour, receives other awards, such as Gold, Platinum and Diamond Disc in Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, after sales of more than 400 thousand copies.
In the month of November “Everything Has Your Time” is news again, receiving 4 Latin GRAMMY nominations, of which it stands with 3 of them: Best Tropical Song for “Your Kisses”, Best Tropical Album for “Everything Has Your Time ”and the highest award“ Best Album of the Year, ”for“ Everything Has Its Time. ”
On November 5, 2017, the “Everything Has Your Hour Tour” tour officially closes, with a monumental reception of the Dominican public at the President Festival, before more than 50,000 people.
“Everything Has Your Hour Tour” visited more than 25 countries, for a total of 53 concerts and over 350,000 people around the world.
In Tenerife, Spain, on Saturday, March 9, Juan Luis Guerra is received with overflowing joy and affection, managing to break all attendance records at the Tenerife Festival, summoning more than 400,000 people at the close of the legendary festival.
The creativity and musical variety of Juan Luis Guerra’s work has placed him as the most universal Dominican artist. He has taken with his word, his music and his life the promotion of the highest values of Dominicanness.
