The oldest sport in history: you will never guess what it is (Op-Ed)

My favorite sport is reportedly one of the world’s oldest sports in the world… Wrestling. That’s right wrestling and combative sports have been around for centuries. Wrestling is a centuries-old sport and the carvings and drawings that depict this sport date back to around 15,000-20,000 years ago in Southern European caves, according to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Several other sources claim that Wrestling goes back even further 5,000 years ago to the Sumerians. There are also archeological and historical traces of wrestling in Ancient Egypt and Greece, according to United World Wrestling.  “Athletes wrestled naked, with their bodies coated with olive oil and covered with a layer of very thin sand to protect the skin from sunlight or from cold during winter,”UWW says.

Wrestling has come a long way from what it used to be to what it is now. Today, we have WWE, famous and beloved wrestlers, wrestling in schools, and so on. Honestly, I am not surprised that this sport was able to stand the test of time because it is very entertaining to watch; nothing beats watching the opponent you are rooting for struggle or scuffle against another.

Wrestling is even mentioned in religious texts. There is a story in the first book of the Bible (Genesis) that talks about Jacob wrestling with God or with an angel and injuring his hip.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always enjoyed wrestling and boxing, so finding this out was a fun experience for me. I always enjoyed watching WWE stars like The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, and Roman Reigns.  I would love to go back in time just to see how these matches took place and how they compared to the matches we hold today.
