Book to Movie Adaptations, New and Coming Soon

In the past few years, books have become incredibly popular again. Social media, specifically Instagram and TikTok, have created a massive buzz for all sorts of literature, old and new. This, in turn, has led to the desire for many books to be adapted into films or TV shows.

One of the biggest books in recent years, “It Ends with Us,” by Colleen Hoover is coming to the theater on August 9, 2024. The film will star Blake Lively as Lily Bloom and Justin Baldoni as Ryle Kincaid. Baldoni is also directing the film, which is being overseen by Colleen Hoover. This book follows the tumultuous relationship between Lily Bloom and Justin Baldoni, showing the raw reality of domestic abuse.

The book series “Dune”, which has gained a massive cult following, recently saw “Dune 2” come out in theaters. The original series started in 1965, followed by an adaptation in 1984. The movie was remade in 2021, and the second part, “Dune 2,” just came out this past March. “Dune” is a science fiction book following Paul Atreides and his journey of accepting his role in this new world.

Also in March, the movie “The Idea of You,” came out through Prime Video. The book, with the same title, by Robinne Lee, came out in 2017. This book follows a love affair between a single mother and the lead singer of a famous band.

Set to come out on November 22, 2024, is the adaptation of the book “Wicked,” by Gregory Maguire. This movie will star Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, and Ethan Slater. “Wicked” had been on Broadway for over 20 years, winning several awards. Due to this massive success and dedicated love, it has been turned into a film.

Italian author Erin Doom published “Fabricante de Lagrimas” in 2021. In April of this year, the book’s adaptation into film came out, known in English as “The Tearsmith.” This movie topped charts for weeks in many countries, blowing up actor Simone Baldassaroni. This book follows two orphans, Nica and Rigel, as they are adopted together, but discover the truths between them.

Recently, at the start of July, the newly adapted series “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” came out. The original book series started coming out in 2019. The series follows Pip, a young girl who tries to uncover more information about a murder five years earlier.

Many TV shows, miniseries, and films have been adapted from books, especially in recent years. What literature would you like to see adapted into visual media?
