Swimmers get the first U.S. gold medal at Paris Olympics, Ledecky falls behind for bronze

The U.S. men’s swimming team scored the first gold for the country in the 4×100 freestyle relay last Saturday.

The race was a pretty large blowout, with the Americans beating out the competition by over a second to take the gold. The Australian team, a powerhouse falling short, took home the silver. Italy finished with bronze.

Team USA has won gold in 10 of the last 13 Olympics for men’s 4×100 relay.

The 4×100 swimming relay in the women’s category ended well for the United States as well, finishing with a silver medal, falling short to Australia. The relay team includes Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, Torri Huske, and Simone Manuel. They finished two seconds short of Australia, but set a new American record for the event at 3:28.92.

This is the United States fourth straight podium finish for the event.

The results from Ledecky came up short this year, with Ledecky falling to bronze in her attempt to reclaim gold in the 400-meter freestyle.

Ledecky finished at just over four minutes, more than two seconds behind Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh who took home silver. Australia’s Ariarne “The Terminator” Titmus defended her Olympic title for her second consecutive gold in the event.

Earlier on Saturday, the U.S. took home their first medal when Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook took home silver in the 3-meter synchronized springboard event.
