Speculation about a sequel to the iconic 2000s movie The Devil Wears Prada was reignited by Emily Blunt during her appearance on the red carpet at the Red Sea International Film Festival (RSIFF) in Saudi Arabia. The award-winning actress, known for her numerous iconic film roles, hinted at the possibility of revisiting her character from the beloved film.
However, no appearance from the 2000s film era could be as iconic as her role in The Devil Wears Prada. The Devil Wears Prada is a 2006 American comedy-drama film that follows the ups and downs of a college graduate’s journey as an assistant for Miranda Priestly, a cutthroat editor of a Runway magazine.
There Blunt took the role of Emily Charlton, a senior assistant and rival to the main character. The movie was a massive success, earning over $326 million globally. According to Deadline, Blunt talked about her experience within the industry and how the roles she played have shaped her into the woman she is today.
When asked about a potential sequel, Blunt remained cautious, unable to confirm anything definitive. However, she expressed enthusiasm about reprising her role, along with the rest of the original cast.
“There (are) rumblings. There is stuff churning around. But I don’t know if I can confirm anything. But we would all be delighted.” said Blunt.
Blunt noted that her role in The Devil Wears Prada significantly influenced her career trajectory, helping her break free from being typecast in period dramas.
“Playing that character, who was so insane, it paved the way for people to see me more as a character actor rather than someone who should just be in period drama… a lot of British people are just subjected to wearing a garnet or a crown at some point,” Blunt remarked.
This interview is the latest on the speculation about the Devil Wears Prada sequel. In July this year, Variety reported that Disney was in discussions to develop the film, with original screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna potentially returning to pen the script. Blunt’s comments suggest that, should the sequel move forward, the original cast would be eager to return.
