The terrible wildfires battering Los Angeles are beginning to affect future NFL games. According to ESPN, the upcoming game between the Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Rams at the SoFi Stadium could be impacted.
On Wednesday, the NFL issued a statement confirming it is closely monitoring the situation and has prepared a contingency plan to move the game to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, if necessary. “The NFL’s priority is the safety of the Los Angeles community,” the statement read. “We are grateful for the tireless efforts of the first responders. Our hearts are with Los Angeles, and everyone affected by the fires.”
The league reassured fans that preparations for the game to proceed as scheduled on Monday night at SoFi Stadium are ongoing. However, it added, “As with all games, there are contingency plans in the event a location change is needed. In this instance, the game would be played on Monday night at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ, if necessary. We will continue to closely monitor developments in the area and remain in contact with public officials, both clubs and the NFLPA.”
The Rams released a similar statement Thursday morning, echoing support for the change in stadiums if the need arose. Additionally, the team thanked first responders for their heroic efforts in fighting the fire.
“The safety of the Los Angeles community is our top priority, and our thoughts are with everyone affected by the fires in the area. We are grateful for the tireless efforts of first responders who continue to protect our city and community as well as individuals who continue to help our neighbors in need.” read the statement.
The ongoing wildfires in the Los Angeles area have already led to evacuation orders for more than 180,000 people. While the NFL has confirmed that training facilities for the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers have not been directly impacted, declining air quality could disrupt future workouts.
At this time, the potential relocation of the Vikings-Rams game remains under deliberation. The game is currently set for Monday at 5 PM PT/8 PM EST at SoFi Stadium.
