Rickey Nelson Henley Henderson an American professional baseball player. Born in Chicago, Illinois,
Henderson spent most of his early childhood in Arkansas with his grandmother. When he turned seven, Henderson joined his from when he was two until he was seven, when he joined the rest of his family in Oakland, California.
There, Henderson began playing baseball and quickly learned that he could bat right-handed despite having a dominant left hand. During his time at Oakland Technical High School, Henley sports other than baseball including basketball, football, and even track.
Following his graduation Henderson signed onto the Oakland Athletics in the 1976 Major League Baseball draft and played for Boise A’s minor league in his first season. Henderson went on to play for other minor league teams including the Modesto Nuts, Jersey City A’s, and Navojoa Mayos, before officially debuting with Oakland Athletics in 1979. Henderson played for the team for five years, earning his only Golden Glove award.
Henderson was traded to the New York Yankees in 1985, where he played for four years. During his time with the team Henderson earned a Silver Slugger Award and joined the 20–50 club, a group of players who achieved 20 home runs and 50 stolen bases in the same season.
Over the years, Henderson was traded back and forth to Oakland Athletics in between stints with other baseball leagues including Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres, Anaheim Angels, New York Mets, and more.
Henderson has the all-time record in runs scored and stolen bases and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009.
