On Tuesday, a shooter opened fire at an adult school in the city of Orebro. Police initially responded to a call claiming five people were dead, but the toll quickly increased.
Risbergska is a school for people over 20 who have never finished their formal education or didn’t receive sufficient grades for higher education. There were not many students on campus as they had gone home after sitting for exams, a spokesperson for the school said.
Swedish police reported that the shooter was a man, and he was dead when police arrived on the scene. Police also said the motive of the shooter is still undetermined, and they did not find any connections between the shooter and any gangs.
“It’s a terrible event, it’s exceptional – a nightmare,” Roberto Eid Forest, the head of the city’s police district, said, CNN reported.
Six people were transported to the hospital, including five with gunshot wounds, according to Jonas Claesson, the regional health care director. Four of the victims needed surgery, and two of them are in stable condition, Claesson said.
BBC reported that in an interview with the Swedish Aftonbladet tabloid, a relative of the suspect said he had not had much contact with family in recent years and was unemployed.
School shootings in Sweden are extremely rare, so many are calling this the worst school shooting in Sweden’s history, but the investigation is still ongoing.
