In the wave of Netflix releases, there have been some quality shows on the platform this past month. Some of them are international – it’s interesting to witness global programming with in-sync subtitles. A show that’s been on my streaming rotation is “The Lady’s Companion”
Created by Bambu Producciones, the series is set in 1871 Madrid. A well-known chaperone in the city, Elena (Nadia de Santiago), is summoned by a wealthy family. Her job is to find the perfect suitor for a young lady. The problem is that the chaperone finds the potential suitor, Santiago (Alvaro Melo), to be attractive. “The Lady’s Companion” deals with the chaperone’s internal battle between her job and attraction.
The show is very entertaining. At first glance, it seems to be a “Bridgerton” inspired clone, but it’s far from that. The colors are vibrant and poppy, almost as a visual callback to Europe’s Romanticism period (1800 -1850). Nonetheless, the chaperone’s fourth wall break also sets this show apart. It’s quirky and a good narrative to display the main character’s inner turmoil. The supporting cast also helps the show’s colorful yet dramatic nature.
Overall, this is a good show for period pieces and romantic enthusiasts. The international flavor is definitely another main draw to the production. Subtitles are definitely needed if you’re not a Spanish speaker. But other than that, you’ll be tossing and turning over “The Lady’s Companion” tendency to be quirky and risqué. It’s not forced, it’s rather natural. A cozy show that I highly recommend.
