Ryan Coogler’s Sinners aims to turn heads

Ryan Coogler has a decorated career. The acclaimed film director has directed beloved movies such as “Fruitvale Station” (2013), “Creed” (2015), and “Black Panther” (2018). His latest offering aims to capture the same sensibilities as his previous ones, but this time, it’s leaning toward the supernatural.

“Sinners,” set in the 1930s Jim Crow era in the South United States, is a story of twin brothers who return to their hometown but find out there is something sinister in the midst. The trailer seems to show themes of heavy demonic overtones with people seen possessed with red eyes and sharpened teeth. This confirms the “genre-fluid” statement that Ryan Coogler has mentioned in an interview – a supernatural, horror, and southern gothic film altogether.

“Sinners” has a lot of stars, with Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, and Delroy Rindo, among others, set to appear. They all seemed to be “transformed” as Southern-speaking characters. A detail that’ll help keep the film immersive and faithful to the history of the region. Not to forget, the characters wear clothing that pertains to that period. Overalls, sturdy boots, and long-sleeved shirts for the men. Dresses, aprons, and headscarves for the ladies. Coogler and the team clearly have done some research to make the film’s period accurate.

As can be seen, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan are a match made in heaven. Like coffee and cream, the two complement each other. Hopefully, that energy will translate to the rest of the cast and direction as well. But knowing Coogler’s track record, this looks like it will be a dub. Make sure to check out “Sinner” on April 18th at a theatre near you. It is guaranteed to turn your head.
