“Sinners,” directed by Ryan Coogler, might be one of the most creative films Hollywood has released in recent years. A movie with Southern Gothic vampires that celebrates black culture? No one’s ever attempted this before, but with the success of this movie, maybe they should’ve.
The creative chemistry between the plot, characters, dialogue, and cinematography is pure magic. What I love about this movie is how Coogler gave us time to learn about each character and grow fond of them.
We get to know both Michael B. Jordan’s characters, Smoke and Stack, and the people who came to the Juke. We learn about Cornbread’s character, played by Omar Benson Miller; Delta Slim, played by Delroy Lindo; Mary, played by Hailee Steinfeld and Annie, played by Wunmi Mosaku; and Bo and Grace Chow, played by Yao and Li Jun Li. Each character provides a unique personality, adding to the emotional depth of the movie.
My absolute favorite scene in that movie was the dance scene in the second act, where music and culture from the past and future united into one sequence. Watching that scene alone sent chills down my spine.
When you look at the other movies released in the past few months or years, you don’t see anything as creative as “Sinners” except for the movies A24 is putting out. And even while A24 movies are creative, not all of them are as good as “Sinners.”
So, my final rating is 5/5, 10/10 or 100/100 because I have no complaints about this movie. Bravo to the crew who worked on it, and keep up the good work.
