Flashback Athlete of the Month for May 2025
Wayne Douglas Gretzky is a former Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Born in Brantford, Ontario, Gretsky learned to play hockey at a very young age and even practiced with his siblings in a backyard rink in his childhood home. He quickly was recognized as a prodigy at the sport playing on youth team at six years old with ten-year-old teammates.
Unfortunately his skill drew the ire of his teammates and their parents, leading his family to help him play the sport in Toronto though it lead them to successfully challenge the Canadian Amature Hockey Assosiation to let him play in a different location.
Wayne the played Junior B hockey team Toronto Nationals at fourteen, where he earned Rookie of the Year honours. Shortly after that, the rising recognition of his talent led to him being selected in the 1977 Ontario Major Junior Hockey League draft by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
A year later Gretzky was signed on with Indianapolis Racers under a personal services contract due to the pending dissolval of the World Hockey Association. After abreif time with the Racers, Gretzky then played for the WHA All-Stars until he was 18 years old.
By 1978 he had carried over into the NHL under the Edmonton Oilers Game, during his nine years with the team he won multiple Hart Memorial Trophies and influenced more teamplaying strategies in the hockey world at that time. By 1988, Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings and his successes continued on. In his seven years with the team he was named Male Athlete of the Decade by the Associated Press and helped increase hockey interest within the United States.
Gretzky joined the St. Louis Blues in 1996 for a single year before accepting a contract with the New York Rangers for three years. After retiring, Gretzy was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999 and the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2000.
He continued to be apart of the hockey world through coaching the Phoenix Coyotes and many of the Canadian Olympic Hockey teams between 2002 to 2010.
