There are a million valid reasons why someone might not want to work customer service, especially if they’re not a people person and the carefully tailored, monitored tone necessary to deal with customers is difficult for them. Those positions also require a level of professionalism through maintaining a certain appearance that might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Those who are used to working from home or working at jobs that don’t put pressure on appearance might find these jobs performative or shallow, and that’s fine. However, some people know that they have to put effort into how they look to feel better about themselves, and for those people, customer service jobs might be the way to go.
For those who wear makeup, they know the process can take a long time if you pay attention to detail and follow the many steps beauty gurus swear by to make your makeup last. That care one puts into themselves allows the makeup wearer to check in and see how they look, how they feel, what type of makeup they want to apply, and that self-awareness bleeds into other tasks as well. Wearing makeup takes awareness so that you don’t rub your face on accident or brush it against something in a way that transfers your makeup from your face to something else. The same can be said for doing your hair or wearing an outfit that makes you feel good about yourself. That self-awareness and positive self-image affects how you speak to yourself and in turn, how you speak to customers.
All in all, putting effort into how you look can positively affect your self-image and how you interact with the world, which is something those in customer service have to be mindful of. So if putting effort into how you look is important to you, and how you look reflects how you feel about yourself, you might thrive in a customer customer service position.
