Last night, disaster struck as extremely heavy rain caused mass flooding in New York City and New Jersey. Reportedly, two people were killed by the flooding, as The Guardian states “The pair died in the city of Plainfield when the car they were in was swept into Cedar Brook during flash flooding, local officials announced on Facebook. Both deaths occurred as heavy rain swept across parts of the US north-east on Monday night, inundating communities and stranding vehicles in roadways.”
Many Subway systems were reportedly affected by the massive surge of storm water, with footage of the flooding surfacing online on sites such as X. According to ABC 7 New York, the MTA CEO and Chair Janno Lieber have spoken on the matter, stating that “What happened last night is something that is a reality for our system that when you hit, when you go north, an inch and three-quarters in an hour, the city sewer system, the storm water system gets backed up and gets overwhelmed and tunnels into the stations.”
Not only has the storm affected the subway system, but many flights have been canceled as well due to the storm. According to Travel Market Report, “195 flights were canceled at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) on Monday, 34% of its entire schedule. At Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), 183 flights were canceled, representing 29% of its total schedule. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) saw 131 cancellations (27% of its schedule) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) had 126 cancellations (16% of its scheduled flights). Most of those delays came from FAA ground delays longer than three hours.” As more reports on the flooding are released, people are urged to remain calm and safe.
