Fighting games will always bring excitement to a certain sector of video game fans. That said, considering how long Riot Games’ upcoming fighting game has been in development, many wonder if that excitement is starting to dwindle.
2XKO is a long-awaited fighting game featuring characters from the League of Legends universe. It was a project that, when announced in 2021, brought excitement to many fans of the game. Like World of Warcraft, League of Legends has had a lengthy history within the video game industry and community despite its 15-year existence.
In that period, the video game introduced numerous characters to its roster and in-game lore for players to get lost in. It was only a matter of time until Riot Games began making content outside of the standard multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) formula, the original game is known for.
So when 2XKO was announced, many fans saw it as a great way to get new audiences into the universe that might not be interested in MOBA games. Arcane, the popular League of Legends-inspired Netflix series, showcased that mainstream audiences were capable of being interested in League of Legends outside of the game. What better way to get people interested than giving more ways to play with its characters?
Unfortunately, despite initial interest, 2XKO’s lengthy development time has caused fans’ frustration. Even members of the fighting game community (FGC) have lost faith, citing the game’s lack of updates and delays. With only seven characters revealed, 2XKO feels like a game that is far from its finish line, and it is a problem considering its release window is 2025.
For 2XKo to have a thriving community, Riot Games needs to be more open to its fans, provide consistent updates, and give more clarity on its roster. People are looking for the next big fighting game, and 2XKO could still be one of its contenders.
