Poems from Cassidy Paredes

Mourning

by

Pitter-pattering rain falls
Some rejoice, but I stall
Trapped in my head
And the waves of emotions.

The sky finally feels
Like someone somewhere sees my fears,
My heart that’s breaking
And I feel a small comfort.

For a moment, and a second,
My tears aren’t wrapped in regret.
They fall with the rain
Down, down, down my weeping face.

I scream out to God— will He hear my cry?
Days pass and fade screaming, “Why?”
And still, the outcome hasn’t changed.
Life continues for some, but not for him.

Hope didn’t win today.
My spirit is dimmed.
It’s not fair—
Nothing about this year has been.

I don’t have a good poem to write.
I don’t have a voice or a song to sing.
Everything good about me is paused.
Mourning this loss.

Mourning this loss.
Mourning my loss.
Mourning. Mourning. Mourning.
And so is the sky.
