After COVID-19 and the rise of more advanced AI tools, video game developers have increasingly been making use of AI to assist them in their game development. AI, as a tool, is extremely adaptable, able to produce products that can revolutionize how the development of a game proceeds.
AI generative tools have been a massive controversy in several business sectors across the world, with every major company rushing to incorporate the new tool into its business. The efficiency that AI tools can bring has led to mass layoffs in several sectors as companies find they can replace workers with AI instead. The video game sector has not been spared from the AI craze.
In the video game industry, before AI became prominent, there were already signs of companies shedding employees. With AI now serving as an alternative, developers are left wondering if they will be replaced or laid off in the coming years.
The fear of replacement is a common trend across history, going all the way back to the printing press removing the desire for scribes. With new technology that replaces the need for old, those whorely on the old for income become worried about their future. AI is no different than previous scares, other than how many fields it will impact. I believe AI will become commonplace in the future and be used by all.
As for how AI is used in game development, what AI is used for is different between companies. Some companies use AI to help brainstorm story drafts or edit scripts; others use it to draft concept art or produce official visuals for their products. AI is incredible when it comes to assisting developers overcome writer’s block and keep presenting them with fresh ideas.
I am interested in seeing how the video game industry evolves as AI tools improve.
