It is no secret that the citizens of the United States love sports. Regardless of the season, sports games are conducted all throughout the year across the United States. However, the enthusiasm for those sports is not equal across the nation; certain hotspots of sports appear across the nation, with New York City being one of them.
In a study conducted by WalletHub, the researchers examined 397 cities across the country and measured the city using 50 different metrics. These metrics were related to the five largest sports in the country: basketball, soccer, hockey, baseball, and football.
Based on the recent study, New York City is ranked #4 as one of the largest sports cities, having a long and accomplished history with several kinds of sports. They were ranked 1st in baseball, 4th in hockey, 6th in football, 6th in soccer, and 7th in basketball. The city is home to 12 professional teams and many more college teams. It is no wonder that many would flock there to witness so many teams.
According to the report, despite New York fans having to pay ‘premium’ prices to watch games, they are willing to pay that price to see such historic and professional teams play.
Based on the report, only three cities are higher than New York City when it comes to sports: Boston, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh.
Sports have been deeply rooted in the culture of New York City, with both the city and the state being host to several of the first teams to form for their sports in the country. Perhaps over time, New York can reach higher and become the largest sports city in the country.
