Youth Solitary Confinement Lawsuit

A lawsuit has opened in the Southern District of New York City regarding the usage of solitary confinement for minors. According to the lawsuit, youth who have been placed in juvenile detention are being held in abusive conditions within solitary confinement. This is lasting for a range of a few days, months, or even years in more serious conditions. Despite regulations in the state that are supposed to prevent these situations, detention centers in New York are still mistreating juveniles.

The lawsuit claims that detention centers are holding youth in small cells with often no windows or access to any other space. They are held without available education or communication to peers, and sometimes without usage of a proper bathroom. These cells only include a single mattress and table on a concrete floor. There is often limited access to clean drinking water.

Living with these conditions for an extended period of time can leave detrimental effects on youth. The children in these situations claim to have left anxious, depressed, and trouble with social skills and a dire need for attention. Because they have spent much of their developmental years in confinement and away from peers and any humans, it is stated that conforming back into society is a struggle.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of four individuals that were placed into solitary confinement during their youth age. They are seeking to ensure that the State better regulates confinement for minors. A judge found in 2024 that New York prisons have been illegally holding prisoners in solitary confinement for too long, but with this lawsuit, it is further being found that these conditions have continued. The lawsuit will be heard in the next upcoming weeks, with the children affected speaking at the hearings.
