Everyone knows that sports in schools are more popular than other activities, such as Art class or Music class. Ever wonder why, though? It’s because it’s the money maker, and it gets the students a lot more excited than an art show or a music concert.
I get it, we have the pep rallies, and the games make a lot of money selling tickets to the families that want to see their students play, and that money helps us buy better gear and the ability to go to away games, and other things that schools may need to better their players. Some scouts will be more willing to go to schools that have good sports programs because of the potential of better players.
I am all for bettering our school’s sports teams and getting them seen, but other activities take a hit when they are not seen for their potential. I think art and music classes need the same recognition, or else we will have students whose hidden skills will never be noticed. I was not an athletic person in school at all.
I stuck with art, ceramics specifically, because that is where I shone. If the arts got more recognition, we would have better art supplies and maybe even art shows to showcase art from all the students. Or the fact that music class doesn’t have much as well, they have concerts, but not so much in the older years, and usually the parents have to buy the instrument they want to play. There is a reason why, in grade school, we had to bring crayons and scissors, and notebooks, because the school didn’t fund the teachers who taught those classes to buy their own supplies.
The athletic students deserve recognition, and they get it, and they usually know their talents, and that is why they join the sport. But when it comes to that shy student who likes to draw quietly in the back of the class, he may not get recognized, and I just think they need the chance to show off their talents too.
