Why I Prefer Movie Versions of Musical Theater Over Live

I’ve seen a few musicals in movie form in my lifetime, and I have to say I prefer sitting at home, under a cozy blanket, eating my favorite snacks, and having the power to pause whenever I want. As someone who hates loud noises, being surrounded by people I do not know, and uncomfortable seating, I’d rather be home while watching anything, whether it’s a Disney movie or something like The Producers or Fiddler on the Roof.

Theaters are a sensory nightmare for me because there is so much going on, like hearing people whispering, limited snack options, the smells of other people’s snacks, and them eating, and the fact that I will miss something if I need to use the restroom.

If it’s a live show its even worse, because the actors have to shout, the bright lights in the room, and people talking too loudly, and it’s usually several hours, which is hard for me, personally, to do.

I grew up on Disney movies, and those are the only musicals that I’ve really seen, other than The Producers and Fiddler on the Roof. I loved watching Disney movies and singing to the songs, and I was even taught how to rewind the VCR because I would watch the movie over and over. I still sing the songs to this day and probably can quote the movies while watching.

Movie versions are also much more accessible because of live streaming from places like Netflix, Disney+, or Hulu. There are both geographical and economic benefits, since you don’t have to travel to see the show live and the digital version is often cheaper than show tickets. You can also enjoy the show more openly without having to worry about the noise of other viewers.

I am not sure I would enjoy seeing something like The Lion King musical live, because even if it was nostalgic, it probably would still be a sensory nightmare. I would love for a sensory-friendly live theater show, maybe with headphones to block other people out, dimmed lighting, and cozy chairs, but I doubt that will happen.

Movies are meant to be enjoyed and whether its in a theater, on stage or in the comfort of your own home, it’s all the matter of preferences. As for me, I’ll stick with sitting in my pjs, with my favorite snacks and candy and drinks, and my kitten while enjoying a movie in the comfort of my bed.
