Manhattan School of Music Presents: Human Expression in Song

On Monday, May 11th, 2026, at 7:30 PM, at Neidorff-Karpati Hall, 130 Claremont Ave, in New York, the Manhattan School of Music Chorale will trace a part of human expression in song, with a program spanning millennia and cultures, featuring music as varied as Lauriden’s “Les Chansons des Roses,” Schubert’s Mass in G, and Cook’s “They Are Mother.”

The conductor of this event is Deborah Simpkin King. The program includes Craig Hella Johnson’s Will There Be A Morning, Sting’s Playing Fields of Gold, Frank Ticheli’s Earth Song, Jennifer Lucy Cook’s They Are Mother, and many more.

Deborah Simpkin King, is a Conductor, new music advocate and master teacher. She plays an active role in the vibrant Manhattan choral scene. Her current ongoing affiliations include those as Founding Artistic Director of the semi-professional Ember, of Ember Choral Arts, Director of Choirs at Manhattan School of Music and Director of Music and Arts at the historic Trinity Episcopal Church in Asbury Park, NJ.

The Large forces of the MSM Chorale will be set in relief not only by the smaller Chamber Choir but also by a piece featuring the treble voice of the Chorale and another featuring the tenor and bass voices.

Manhattan School of Music has upheld a tradition of Excellence in music education, starting as a small community music school and now being a top conservatory.

Janet Daniels Scheck, the school’s founder, studied piano in Paris and began organizing young musicians to teach lessons and by 1918 had established an independent music school of 120 students and a faculty of 23. With Cellist Pablo Casals and Pianist Harold Bauer joining her effort. They soon financed a new building and concert hall around 1938 on East 105th Street.
