Advocates Push To Cap NYC Citi Bike Rate

New York City residents and transportation advocates are calling for a cap on NYC’s Citi Bike Rate. This comes after Citi Bike’s popularity skyrocketed in the past few years, with nearly 200,000 daily rides in June 2026 alone, according to rideshare company Lyft, which runs the bike program. The program proved profitable since the rideshare company Lyft took it over in 2021; last year alone, the program’s earnings rose to $229 million.

A recent campaign by the transportation advocacy group Transportation Alternatives leads the charge, advocating to cap the price of a Citi Bike 45-minute ride at just $3, the same rate as a subway or bus fare. This is largely in response to Citi Bike fares rising due to its popularity, with fares reaching $ 12.50 this year.

Brooklyn City Council Member Lincoln Restler introduced a bill in hopes of lowering the Citi Bike program’s price. Restler argues that the program should be subsidized as all other forms of public transportation NYC offers to its residents. Bike programs that are subsidized in other cities across Europe and Canada help keep prices down and are easier to operate.

NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani has shown support for lowering Citi Bike prices, due to it complementing his administration’s ongoing efforts for better and cheaper transportation for low-income New Yorkers. That said, there has yet to be official movement from the city administration towards addressing these concerns. Regardless, more and more of the public are voicing their opinions on Citi Bike rates.
