The New York Giants shocked football fans by firing head coach Brian Daboll just four games into his fourth season with them. The decision took place just after the Giants lost 24-20 to the Chicago Bears, which left the team at 2–8.
Daboll’s time in New York began with some great things. In fact, he was named NFL Coach of the Year in 2022 after leading the Giants to the playoffs. Still, the success that happened so early during his time there has since faded. Since then, the Giants have struggled. They went 6–11 in 2023 and then fell even more to a 3–14 in 2024. This season, their problems only got worse because they would have good leads in the game only for them to get blown later on.
Giants’ ownership have made a statement where they expressed disappointment in recent seasons and hope for a fresh voice that can change things for the team.
“We spoke this morning about the direction of our franchise on the field, and we have decided that, at this time, it is in our best interest to make a change at the head coaching position,” owners John Mara and Steve Tisch said. “The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for the franchise. We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product.”
They moved the offensive coordinator, Mike Kafka, to the interim coach. The team said general manager Joe Schoen will remain in his role and will lead the search for a new coach.
Some think that firing the coach midseason is a bold move. It seems the Giants want to ensure they are sending the message that they’re not satisfied with the results and want better. Still, others worry that an actual solution may require more than just this change, and that the issues run deeper than the head coach.
No one has been announced to permanently take his place yet. There have been names that have been mentioned around, but there isn’t a definitive answer. Until then, Kafka’s role is only temporary.
I understand why the Giants made this change. At the same time, changing coaches midseason is a risky move. I hope that the next coach they hire will build on what this team has, fix the mistakes that held them back and lead the Giants into better and more successful seasons in the future.
