Admit It, We Love Bad Movies

Have you ever heard about a movie so bad, you just had to watch? Perhaps you’re fascinated by the “Sharknado” series or find yourself craving another “Cats” rewatch. Whether it’s the comedic value or the comforting awfulness, we just keep on watching. Yes, they’re bad, but you have to admit it – we all love bad movies.

And, the funny part is, we don’t just endure them, we seek them out. So, what is behind this phenomenon that keeps us tuning into films that fail so spectacularly?

Sometimes bad movies are more entertaining than award-winners – often not in the way the directors intended. The flaws are, ironically, what makes them so great. Stiff acting, absurd dialogue and unhinged plots become the highlight of the film, turning a fail into comedic gold. We find ourselves quoting these bad lines with friends, making watching a “bad” movie a shared experience. These movies succeed because they are so bad. It’s part of the charm to be able to poke fun at a film.

There’s also something comforting about turning on a bad movie. There’s no need for a deep analysis or emotional investment; they’re all about entertaining. We are in an era of movie snobs and cinematic prestige, and these films offer a little escape from that seriousness. It’s one of the best ways to just sit on the couch and turn your brain off for a few hours. Sometimes, predictability and clumsy cliches are just what you need.

So, don’t let your local Letterboxd fanatic tell you that you have no taste if you love bad movies. You just appreciate films in all forms – no matter how ridiculous. For a film to be great, it doesn’t have to be perfect or meaningful. Sometimes all you need is a little brain-numbing laugh.
