Adult Swim Releases Teaser for Rick and Morty Season 8

Adult Swim unveiled a new teaser for the upcoming eighth season of Rick and Morty early this week. The teaser was revealed during the show’s panel at New York Comic Con 2024 (NYCC 2024).  While the teaser doesn’t reveal much about the season’s plot, it features Rick auditioning replacements for Jerry, only for Morty and his family to convince him to keep Jerry as he is.

Season 8 of Rick and Morty appears to focus on striking a balance between the series’ hallmark humor and its darker themes of existential dread and dysfunctional family dynamics. This marks a shift from the previous season, which leaned heavily into themes of morality and nihilism.

According to Bleeding Cool, series creator Dan Harmon and writer Scott Marder hinted at this tonal adjustment in an exclusive interview with Variety earlier this year.

“I will always target the episodic personally. Because, like, your job is to fight gravity. And gravity is serialization. That’s what happens organically; gravity is a great thing. But you’re supposed to want to fly,” said Marder. “Season 8 will have a similar flow and vibe to seasons 6 and 7, which struck a cool balance of silliness and one-up canonical stuff. That’s the content I want as a fan. Harmon and I work hard to jam all that together. I’m proud of these recent seasons; they blend what I, as a fan, hope for perfectly,” he added.

“There’s obviously been a lot of shakeups and transitions that have luckily coincided with resolving some canonical storylines. If I could set a framework for fans, it’s this: the old characters and familiar elements are still there, but this is an opportunity for a rebirth,” said Harmon.

“I think people should expect more random embers shooting off that fire and evolving into organically massive serialized arcs of their own,” he continued.

Rick and Morty Season 8 is slated for release in 2025. Fans are encouraged to follow the show and its creators on social media for updates. The series is available on various streaming platforms, including Hulu, Max, and Amazon Prime.
