AFGE Union Calls for the End of the Shutdown

The American Federation of Government Employees’ (AFGE) president, Everett Kelley, has recently put out a statement calling for Congress to end the shutdown with a “clean” resolution bill.

Everett Kelley wrote in a statement, “Both political parties have made their point, and still there is no clear end in sight,” Everett He continues, “It’s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today. No half measures, and no gamesmanship.”

The union has been making its voice heard, with the shutdown harming federal workers the most. The union has called the government shutdown an avoidable crisis and that the political grandstanding of both parties is only harming American workers and families they are supposed to represent.

In another statement, Kelley gave his thoughts on the impact the shutdown is having on government workers. “When the folks who serve this country are standing in line for food banks after missing a second paycheck because of this shutdown, they aren’t looking for partisan spin,” he continues, “They’re looking for the wages they earned. The fact that they’re being cheated out of it is a national disgrace.”

The AFGE is the United States’ largest union of federal workers, representing over 800,000 government workers. They have also filed lawsuits against President Trump’s administration for multiple reasons, the main ones being the mass layoffs by Russel Vought and out-of-office emails blaming Democrats for the shutdown.

The AFGE has made its issues with the current shutdown known to the government and is seeking a quick resolution to the shutdown so that federal workers can receive the pay that they are owed. It is a shame that this shutdown is holding the livelihood of American citizens hostage until it is over, with a ticking clock until their savings run out.
