Aiyuk Requests Trade: 3 Best Fits for 49ers Star Wideout

Tuesday afternoon, San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk requested a trade from the team. The 49ers have been adamant about keeping him in the Bay, yet amid months of contract negotiations regarding an extension, things changed in May. Aiyuk grew frustrated, voicing his displeasure via social media for weeks, but nothing was made official until yesterday. It is starting to feel like some kind of deal could get done, so let’s look at some of the top landing spots for Aiyuk.

  1. Washington Commanders

This one appears to be the most obvious option as well as Aiyuk’s top choice. Although the team has not had nearly as much success as the Niners have, it is deeper than that for Aiyuk. Washington drafted LSU’s Jayden Daniels with their first-round pick this past April. This is relevant because before playing at LSU, Daniels was the QB for the Arizona State Sun Devils where, in his freshman year, his top target was Brandon Aiyuk. The two remain close off the field, having previously discussed teaming up. Washington could use a solid number two receiver and who better than someone who already has trust in their rookie play-caller?

  • Pittsburgh Steelers

A second option could be the Pittsburgh Steelers, who need a number two receiver after the departure of Diontae Johnson. Going into the 2024 season, Johnson’s leaving for Carolina leaves five touchdown receptions unaccounted for. Aiyuk, who had seven TD receptions in 2023, would fit seamlessly into that role. In addition, Brandon Aiyuk and Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin have been compared on social media, with many saying the two look similar. In response to this Aiyuk tweeted, “@CoachTomlin they saying we twins. What you think?” Perhaps this relationship goes a bit further than just being a doppelganger.

  • Los Angeles Chargers

Lastly, Los Angeles could be a sneaky candidate to make a move for Aiyuk. This offseason LA lost 1,200-yard receiver and long-time Charger, Keenan Allen. Allen was quarterback Justin Herbert’s safety blanket, accounting for most of the team’s targets. With him and former Charger Mike Williams leaving, the Bolts desperately need a star. Aiyuk’s playstyle should work well with their offensive scheme under new head coach Jim Harbaugh. In theory, the Chargers have enough money to make the trade and sign Aiyuk to a long-term deal. If they manage to do this, it would instantly impact their offense.
