Alex Ovechkin breaks new goal record!

The Russian Washington Capitol Left Wing has done the unthinkable in hockey history. Alex Ovechkin scored his record breaking 895 career goals this past sunday. Although the Capitols lost to the New York Islanders 4-1, this is still a huge achievement for Ovechkin’s Hall Of Fame career.

In his 20th season, “The Great 8” has become the 10th player in NHL to claim the title as its all time goals leader. Ovechkin overtakes NHL giant Wayne Gretzky’s position, who previously had 894 goals. A record that stood for 31 years seemed to not b able to be broken but Ovechkin proved doubters wrong.

A total of 1,487 games and being an elite goal scorer will do that to you. The organization gathered around Ovechkin to honor his record breaking achievement after the game. Ovechkin congratulated his team, mentors, and family for the journey. Even Gretzky shook Ovechkin’s hand, embraced him and congratulated the “Great 8” and his family for the accomplishment. It was a big night for not only the NHL but for the history of hockey.

With the NHL playoffs happening in a week, there are plenty of media pundits who have tried to invite Ovechkin on their show. However, regardless of his record-breaking achievement – the “Great 8” has declined those invitations as his mind is set for the playoffs. The 39-year-old still has the joy he had when first entered the league back in the mid 2000s. Ovi still got it – and he’s not letting the virality of his achievement cloud his competitive nature.
