Fashion Designer of the Month for August 2025

Bio

Lee Alexander McQueen aka Alexander McQueen was a British fashion designer and couturier. Born in London, England had an interest in fashion at a young age and would experiment by designing dresses for his sisters. McQueen began his career after studying tailoring at Newham College and apprenticing at bespoke tailor Anderson & Sheppard.

As he developed his skills, McQueen work under various jobs within the industry, for theatrical costumes and other brands and designers like Red or Dead and Koji Tatsuno. Eventually McQueen went back to school and studied fashion at Central Saint Martins in an 18-month Master’s fashion design course. Following his graduation, he struck a mentorship and friendship with magazine editor Isabella Blow, who would help McQueen using her contacts when he established his own label in 1992.

McQueen would take the fashion world by storm with his many controversially titled runway shows with many of his designed after prominent horror films from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. In addition to collaborations with brands like Gucci and Voge, McQueen had worked with many celebrities including Nicole Kidman, Penélope Cruz, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rihanna, Monica Brown, and more.

Prior to his death, McQueen showcased 36 womenswear collections.
