Are Arthouse Cinemas Making a Comeback In NYC?

The Theater industry has been in tumultuous times in recent years. While things have slowly bounced back from the rocky economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, many places within the theater industry still retain their scars. Luckily, the opening of a new arthouse theater may be the right sign that things are turning around for the better.

The UWS Cinema Center announced the upcoming opening of the new Uptown Film Center this week, after purchasing the building this past April. The Center aims for this theater to be a step apart from other commercial theaters.

According to UWS Cinema Center president Ira Deutchman, speaking with Deadline, the Uptown Film Center will be a full-time art film theater that blends independent film experiences with educational programs and cultural partnerships for the surrounding community.

While normal theaters are wonderful as a third space, another place for people to gather and enjoy film. Arthouse theaters are amazing as alternative educational experiences. These places can be used as hosts for community artists and learning centers for anyone interested in the arts or art within other industries.

Local theaters are a great way of facilitating the growth of local artists and local art scenes. It encourages new eyes to travel and, more often than not, improve the lives of locals who live near it.

Hopefully, when the Uptown Film Center opens in 2028, it will be profitable enough that more theaters like it will be opened within and beyond the tri-state area.
