Almost every week, social media tells us the newest, “hottest” piece of clothing we just need to buy right away. For most people, especially the younger generation, we want to be kept in the loop of what is trending in the fashion world, and we run to our computers to order whatever it is we need to be wearing. What I have seen recently is an uproar in animal prints, baggy jeans, and kitten heels.
If we sit back and take a look at fashion trends from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, we can see many similarities between what is trending now, and what was trending then. Especially when it comes to the trends mentioned prior–animal prints were huge in the 80s, baggy jeans were what to be caught wearing in the 90s, and kitten heels were the “it girl” footwear in the 2000s.
Fashion is a never-ending cycle, and as trends come to play in recent times, we often are recycling ideas from fashion fanatics that came before us. However, rather than it being a complete copy of what covered earlier magazines, influencers are taking their own spins on these ideas, becoming the reason why they are able to gain popularity again. We aren’t seeing the exact concept each time–but rather putting a modern spin on the trend while still captivating its beauty that caught our eyes in the first place.
When it came to animal prints taking over once again, it was not primarily focused on cheetah or leopard print as it was in the 80s (although we all fell back in love with these prints again), we expanded to zebra, cow, and even snakeskin. We took the concept of animal print and spun it to make it popular again. This method is how we can keep past fashion trends alive and reuse ideas in more modern aspects.
Without our fashion gurus of the past, we would not have over half of the trends we love today. With every fashion trend we see, we can connect part of it to the people who helped us fall in love with fashion in the first place. Fashion recycles ideas, but without old ideas- our new ideas would not be as iconic.
