Until the 2010s everyone had to go stand in a line, put their items on the line, and have a very uncomfortable staring contest with the checkout lady(or man). You pay them, then take your bags and go on your way.
Starting around 2010 they made the very convenient self checkout stations where customers can scan their own items, bag them, and take them home and it has brought, later down the road, delivery services like spark(walmart) for people to go shopping for others and get paid.
Now I think that customers get alot out of self checkouts, especially the younger generation, but older people, seem to prefer the regular way. In a business point of view however it can break or hurt them. Not having to pay less people do tun checkouts is a money saver but they have to also have pay someone to run those checkouts to make sure nobody is stealing anything.
And as services like spark become more popular they have to pay their employees to either shop around for the customers orders or load the cars for the people who deliver the orders. So it feels like it would hurt the business more than helping it and it helps customers more because they don’t have to go shopping themselves especially if they live in a area far from the store.
Also when the self checkouts have to be shut down, or they have an error or won’t take debit cards or something else that can be inconviente for the customers and the business owners and the managers of the stores. It can be costly if they have to to fix them or pay someone to fix them because they don’t have the right training or tools to fix it themselves.
I know that checkouts help people like me because of social anxiety, and my autism makes it hard for me to go to a regular checkout lane and have that awkward conversation with the cashier that probably does not want to be there or care about how the customer is and if they found everything.
I know that self-checkouts have helped me alot and I am very thankful for them personally!
