Ash: A Different Kind of Horror

Horror movies have been experiencing a renaissance. It’s not uncommon to see a film from A24’s studio, such as “Hereditary” (2018), “Midsummer” (2019), or “X” (2022), inspiring the genre in recent years. This has given the genre an angle of thought-provoking and artistic freedom that has not been seen in ages. Speaking of developments, one non-A24 film is continuing this lane, and it’s looking intriguing by the minute.

Enter Ash (2025), a new horror film directed by award-winning record producer Flying Lotus, is slated to come out on Friday, March 21. The movie is about a woman named Riya who wakes up to see her space station crew all murdered. She attempts to investigate the cause while being involved in a horrifying predicament as the mystery unravels.

The film stars Eiza Gonzales and Breaking Bad alum Aaron Paul. From the trailer, it’s very abstract and sci-fi-oriented. There are instances of glitches showing up that represent that some things are not what they seem. You can argue it’s a mix between Event Horizon and Dead Space but with a neon color palette.

Overall, it appears to be an interesting movie. One might call the production low budget, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be bad. Signs point out that the film will be a cohesive, cerebral flick with which to engage. It’s not a straight-up slasher flick; it’s a psychological thriller-esque piece that will challenge its audience. Prepare to have your mind altered this Friday.
