Benefits of Reformer Pilates

Reformer Pilates is quickly becoming one of the more popular exercise routines in the country. Rather than being done on a mat like in traditional pilates, reformer pilates is done on a reformer machine. The machine has several cords, and you place your feet and/or hands into these cords. The cords create some resistance that is great for strengthening certain muscles throughout one’s body.

Using a reformer machine has plenty of benefits, some of which include building strength, increasing balance and flexibility, lowering pain, and reducing anxiety.

Each exercise is continuously stretching your muscles (in a good way), which is a huge help in becoming more flexible. This stretching and building of muscles can prevent certain back and neck problems, and some studies even say that reformer pilates can reduce women’s menstrual pain. Science has also proved that pilates produces endorphins which in turn can reduce anxiety.

Reformer pilates also help align your body allowing for increased balance, especially in the elderly. And since so many of the specific exercises are done to strengthen the core, it can even help with poor posture!

According to pilatesfoundation.com, about 12 million people practice pilates each year as of 2023. And that number is continuing to grow, but mostly with women. Clearinghouseforspot.gov says that 90% of participation in Pilates is made up of these “Pilates Princesses”, with most instructors being female as well. While it can be used by anyone, reformer pilates is a little more advanced than average pilates. Normally it is recommended to begin working out along with an instructor. These types of classes usually range from $20-$75 and have an average duration of 45 minutes to an hour.
