Make Up Artist of the Month for March 2025
Bernadine Anderson is an influential American make up artist. Born in Nebraska, Anderson developed an interest in makeup at a young age by browsing various makeup magazines in local stores. While Anderson initially had an interest in the editorial world, she quickly grew determined to develop her makeup skills for a more hands on approach. That said, she aimed for something further than to end up in makeup magazines, Anderson wanted to see her make up on the big screen.
Breaking into Hollywood proved to be a difficult task especially as a minority woman in the 60’s. However, after feeling a class action lawsuit it eventually opened an opportunity to receive the last ever 3-year apprenticeship at Warner Brother’s Studios.
Anderson began her Hollywood make-up career working on stunt doubles. Along her career Anderson even made friendships and working relationships with numerous popular actors and actresses at the time including Jane Fonda. Anderson is considered to be a pioneer for Black makeup artists within Hollywood.
Some of her work can be found in popular movies like Coming to America, Boomerang, Vampire in Brooklyn, Bad Company, What’s Love Got to Do With It, Another 48 Hrs, Harlem Nights, Police Academy 6, and more.
