Beyond the Gimmick: Are Foldable Phones Actually Useful, or Just Expensive Novelties?

Foldable smartphones, once hailed as mobile technology’s next frontier still grapple with a basic question: Do they offer truly indispensable functions beyond novelty? Despite ongoing advancements in design and durability, the elusive “killer app”— a single compelling use case justifying their premium price — remains largely out of reach.

Foldable phones often highlight increased screen real estate and enhanced multitasking. Apps like Google Calendar, Microsoft Office Suite, Kindle and Evernote show optimized dual-pane layouts. Some users find the larger unfolded display a convenient portable monitor through Duet Display or an immersive canvas for creative work with Canva. Gaming and media consumption, especially for 4:3 content also benefit from the larger screen turning a pocketable device into a small tablet.

Yet, many of these “killer apps” are incremental improvements not revolutionary changes. More screen real estate is useful for productivity but not exclusive to foldables. Tablets and larger “slab” phones offer similar experiences often at lower costs and with fewer durability worries. The “flex” mode for hands-free video calls or media viewing is neat but external accessories provide similar convenience for standard smartphones.

The market shows this uncertainty. Foldable smartphone shipments grow yet remain a small fraction of the overall market. Challenges include fragile hinges and flexible displays, higher repair costs and battery life concerns. Premium pricing, often over $1,000, significantly hinders many consumers who see little tangible return. Enthusiastic early adopters often return to traditional smartphones when upgrading suggesting long-term utility does not always outweigh drawbacks.

The true “killer app” for foldables might not be one application. Instead, it could be a profound shift in how we interact with devices — a seamless blend of phone and tablet, feeling natural and indispensable. Until that paradigm-altering integration emerges, foldable phones risk remaining a niche luxury not a mass-market necessity. Their practicality for now, largely depends on individual needs for a larger adaptable screen in a compact form factor rather than universal innovation.
