The Yankees continued their six-game road trip last night, with their first of three in Philadelphia taking on the first-place Phillies.
The newest Yankee, Jazz Chisolm Jr., started the game out of position. During his time in Miami, Chisholm played both second base and the outfield for the Marlins. On Tuesday he ran out as New York’s third baseman and fared quite well.
Chisholm played a clean game and appeared to be pretty comfortable playing there. Ironically, the lone Yankees error came from second basemen Gleyber Torres. When rumors swirled, that Torres would move to third to allow Chisholm to play second, Torres said, “I’m a second baseman. I play second”.
As for Chisholm, he performed even better at the plate. He went 2/4 with two home runs and three RBIs. His second home run came in the 9th inning when the Phillies had a position player on the mound, something that Chisholm has struggled with in the past. After the game, he said, “He’s [Judge] like go ahead use my bat…it worked.” And that it did as he sent his second homer of the night over the right field fence.
When asked if he would use that bat again, he replied, “Definitely not gonna use that again tomorrow, that bat was so heavy”. Judge too had success with that bat, putting up the same of two home runs and three RBIs.
New York also got a solid bounce-back performance from their young starting pitcher Luis Gil, who had been struggling. Gil threw 5.1 innings and let up five hits with eight strikeouts.
The Phillies’ starter, Zach Wheeler, got lit up by Yankee bats who continue their domination over righty pitchers. Wheeler, who has been excellent all season long, let up seven runs, his most in an outing since June 16th in Baltimore. The final score was 14-4 Yankees.
Tonight, on the mound for Philadelphia is Aaron Nola who has an ERA of 3.46. He will face the Yankees’ Will Warren, who will be making his MLB debut in the second game of this series, which starts at 6:40 p.m.
