Coach John Beam Shot at Oakland College

On November 13th, John Beam, a college football coach who is most well known for their part in the Netflix show ‘Last Chance U’, was shot on the Oakland College campus.

The attack was said to have occurred at a football facility on the campus of Laney College. He started working there in 2012 and worked there for 12 years before stepping down in 2024. In the initial statement put out by the college, they did not disclose who was shot, only their position at the school.

The College put out the following statement shortly after the incident: “A senior member of our athletic staff was shot on campus in the Laney Field House. The individual was immediately transported to a local hospital, and we are keeping them — and their loved ones — in our hearts during this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect for their privacy, we are not releasing their name at this moment,”.

According to the Oakland police department, the shooter fled the scene, and the only description they have is “a male; unknown race, wearing all dark clothing and a black hoodie.”.

The Oakland Mayor, Barbara Lee, had this to say regarding the incident: “I am heartbroken by today’s shooting at Laney College — the second shooting on an Oakland campus in one week,” she continues, “We must continue confronting the ongoing gun violence crisis that is robbing our community of safety and stealing futures.”.

It is uncertain why Joh Bean was shot by the unknown assailant, but it would appear the attack was planned based on the behavior of the attacker. I hope Bean will be able to recover from the attack and that the perpetrator is swiftly apprehended.
