Athlete of the Month for April 2026
Cori “Coco” Gauff is an American tennis player who was born on March 13, 2004. She is from Delray Beach, Florida, and has played tennis since she was 6 years old. She began training at a professional tennis academy at the age of 10.
She began her tennis career playing on the junior circuit at the remarkable age of 13, reaching the U.S. Open Juniors Final against Amanda Anisimova. Gauff went on to actually win her first grand slam at the 2018 Junior’s French Open and went on to lift the U.S. Open Doubles title alongside compatriot Caty McNally the same year.
Gauff achieved one of the biggest victories of her early career when she defeated legend Venus Williams at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships event, where she went on to reach the second week of a grand slam for the first time in a comeback victory against Polona Hercog.
Gauff went on to find major success on the professional WTA circuit, where she finds herself in thrilling rivalries against Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and Jessica Pegula. She has won several titles in both singles and doubles, and has even claimed titles on the bigger stages. She won the Cincinnati Masters, Beijing, Wuhan, Washington D.C., and has even won two grand slams, including the 2023 Edition of the U.S. Open and the 2025 Edition of the French Open, winning both against Aryna Sabalenka.
Gauff has earned the reputation of being one of the fastest players on the women’s side, often extending intense rallies through her movement and footwork. She is a nightmare for any player to go up against, and her athletic skill, along with her amazing tennis IQ, are continuing to carry her to the top as she sits comfortably inside the Top 5 Rankings.
