Artist of the Month for July 2025
Coldplay is a popular British pop rock band. Formed in London in 1997, the group consists of vocalist and pianist Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, drummer and percussionist Will Champion, and manager Phil Harvey. The band members met at University College London and went under two name changes, first Big Fat Noises to Starfish and finally Coldplay.
They released their first EP “Safety” in 1998 independently, before signing with Parlophone Records for their debut 2000 album Parachutes. The album garnered the band their first Brit Award and Grammy Award for Album of the Year and Best Alternative Music Album, respectively.
Coldplay’s popularity continued to climb as each album was released until their 2008 album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, which fully cemented them into the mainstream, particularly with the single Viva La Vida.
The band continued to release even more music and tour across the world. Outside of playing live, the band also frequently collaborates with numerous English and non-English speaking artists. The band has made ten studio albums, 18 EPs, 6 Live albums, 12 Compilation albums, and sold over 100 million albums worldwide.
