Competitive Club Sports Should be Free for College Students

Competitive club sports offer a fun but serious athletic outlet for athletes who want to take sports seriously for the season but still have other commitments in the off season. This environment is perfect for college students who are in between being a casual enjoyer of a sport and a collegiate-level athlete. The competitive nature gives that push to go to practice, work well with your teammates, and keep up with your diet and exercise in between practice days, all of which can be difficult for college students who are focused on studying.

With competitive club sports where you’re competing against other players/teams as well as your own teammates, and with yourself to try to better your performance, a student can leave their academic life outside of the practice area and focus on something other than their school work. Students without an outlet often experience burnout faster than students who do, and with free access to serious competitive sports, students can find communities where they can do something they enjoy, make friends, and dedicate their time to something that will yield high rewards with the right attitude and dedication.

Plus, free club sports don’t mean that everyone who signs up is guaranteed a spot, as club teams could still hold tryouts and determine who gets to be on the team based on skill and teachability. This would encourage people that couldn’t afford the expensive fees before but still have the talent to try out. With this model, members of the teams could trust that their teammates not only care, but have what it takes to make a winning team.
