Born in Billericay, Essex, England, Gandy wanted to be a veterinary surgeon as a child, but he lacked the grades. In college, he studied multimedia computing at the University of Gloucestershire. It was during that time that Gandy’s roommate entered him into ITV’s This Morning modelling competition. 21 years old at the time, Grandy won the competition, earning a contract with Select Model Management in London. He left college behind to pursue modelling full-time.

Gandy’s muscular build stood out among skinnier models, causing many fashion designers to change their standards. In his early career, Gandy modelled for companies like Zara, Marks & Spencer, Hugo Boss, H&M, and Massimo Dutti. He is best known for his work in the 2007 advertising campaign for “Light Blue”, the Dolce & Gabbana fragrance.

He starred in his own 280-page coffee table book titled David Gandy by Dolce & Gabbana, which featured shots of Gandy from their collaborations over the years. He has also appeared on the front covers of numerous magazines, in editorial photoshoots, and in commercials.
