Fashion Designer of the Month for May 2025

Bio

Demna Gvasalia is a well-known Georgian fashion designer. Born in Sokhumi during the war in Abkhazia, Demna and his family escaped to the capital for safety but continued to move throughout Demna’s childhood from Ukraine and even Russia. Demna began developing an interest in fashion and design following aprolonged experience navigating the bureaucracy of living an immigrant camp in Düsseldorf, Germany with his parents. There he grew interested in the designs of jackets, caps, armbands, boots, badges, and patches.

Eventually, Demna went to Tbilisi State University for an international economics degree and later a fashion design Masters degree from Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he graduated with a Master’s degree in Fashion Design in 2006. Despite having no connections, he moved to Paris and began his fashion career collaboratuing with Walter van Beirendonck on a collection.

Three years later Demna joined Maison Martin Margiela and worked on their woman’s  collections for four year until he was appointed senior designer of women’s ready-to-wear collections at Louis Vuitton.

A year later Demna would launch the Veterans brand alongside his brother Guram, debuting their first women’s ready-to-wear collection was presented at that year’s Paris Fashion Week. The collection was nominated LVMH’s Young Fashion Designer Prize.

Shortly after that Demna succeeded Alexander Wang as the creative director of Balenciaga and departed from Vetements four years later.

Demna collaborated with a multitude of celebrity clients including Jenna Ortega, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. In recent years Demna was appointed as the next creative director of the global fashion brand Gucci.
