It is not surprising that many voters have lost confidence in our Democratic politicians, especially after what happened in the 2024 elections. Democrats who want their voter base to trust them need to run on a platform that actually holds political leaders accountable.
There can be no more “forgive and move on”. That mentality is what got the United States into this mess. Our current Republican government officials have consistently shown that they believe they are above the law. They have adopted an “act first, ask for a pardon later” mentality. US citizens can not allow this to be normalized.
Many have seen the videos of ICE officers in Minneapolis literally murdering a woman yesterday, a US citizen, and yet our government has doubled down on the stance that they are not doing anything wrong. Enough is enough. If laws mean nothing, what is stopping that from happening to any one of us? Republicans know what they are doing is wrong; they wouldn’t put so much effort into silencing dissenting voices otherwise. Accountability needs to be at the center of Democrats’ agendas.
Republican politicians, current and former, will obviously not take this lying down. In fact, former Trump advisor Steve Bannon and others have publicly stated that if Republicans lose the midterms and future presidential elections, many of them are likely to go to jail. They are aware that what they are doing is unlawful and are afraid of the consequences. If Trump is going to hand out pardons like candy, what is stopping Republican leaders from doing whatever they want? Drastic action needs to be taken against those who are destroying the democratic fabric of our country, thread by thread.
As we head into a year of midterm elections, Democratic nominees need to listen carefully to what voters actually want to see. And what is important to me, and I’m sure many others, is seeing actions taken not only to stop Republican politicians from acting outside the law, but to hold them accountable for that abuse of power.
