Do the Simple Things Make You Happy?

Every day, we’re bombarded with countless tasks that we often view as just “work” or part of our regular routine. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life and forget to take a step back to appreciate the small things. But what if we could shift our perspective? What if, instead of seeing every task as something we have to do, we saw it as something we get to do? That shift in mindset could make a world of difference.

Over the past couple years, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with some incredible baseball players based in Africa. These players dream of one day making it to the professional level, but the challenges they face are nothing short of overwhelming. The conditions they work under are difficult, to say the least. Simple things we might take for granted—like having access to a gym—are luxuries to them. I’ve watched videos of these players using makeshift equipment—cinder blocks, stones, and whatever else they can find—to work out and stay in shape. These players are determined, resourceful, and resilient, but they have limited resources. The contrast between their situation and what we have in the United States is striking. We often overlook the wealth of resources and opportunities available to us, but these players’ perseverance reminds us just how much we truly have to be grateful for.

One person who always comes to mind when I think about this mindset is Nick Swisher. Nick has an undeniable enthusiasm for the game of baseball, but more importantly, he radiates gratitude. You can tell that he’s living in the moment, savoring each opportunity he gets to be around the game and interact with others. His approach to the game—along with his genuine appreciation for every experience—has been a powerful reminder to me and many others of how fortunate we are to have the chance to do what we love.

For young athletes, especially, it’s so important to understand how blessed they are to step out on the field. It’s easy to get caught up in the grind, the pressure, and the expectations, but it’s crucial to take a moment and recognize just how lucky you are. We often overlook the privileges we have, but taking time to reflect and truly appreciate them can help keep us grounded and maintain perspective.

So today, I challenge you to think about the parts of your daily routine that you might take for granted. Are you grateful for having clean water? A roof over your head? Nutritious meals to fuel your day? If you take a moment to think about it, I’m sure you can compile a list of things you have that not everyone in the world is fortunate enough to experience. Recognizing these blessings can help you find more joy in your day-to-day life and appreciate those moments a bit more. Gratitude is a powerful tool—and the more we use it, the more we realize how much we truly have.
