Does Music Encourage Productivity?

Music is a large part of entertainment, but that isn’t to say it cannot be used practically. Music has been revealed to be very beneficial for various reasons. It can help relieve stress, improve memory, provide better sleep, and much more. People often play it in the background when working on something else, but does it ever become a distraction? Is there a certain genre that works better than other kinds of music?

For myself, it relies heavily on what sort of activity it is. Some kinds of music can be a distraction for one thing while being motivational for other things. For instance, the genre of Lo-fi has become popular with students because it helps with studying. The relaxing beats and mellow tones help with relaxing and can narrow the focus for mental exercises. 

Another use of music is during physical exercise, which is what I often find myself listening to when jogging. It helps motivate me to go further and improves my performance. Something like lo-fi would not be effective enough to push people to go the distance with their workout, which is why rock and hip-hop are preferred for their intense rhythms and lyrics. On the other hand, these qualities would distract from studying or anything that requires concentration. 

Of course, not everyone is alike, and certain things work better for some than others. If you find yourself in a place devoid of sound, try putting on some headphones and see if it helps you focus. You may find that improvement can be found in the most unexpected places.
