DOGE Comes to a Close

After 10 months of operation, the Department of Government Efficiency, more commonly known as DOGE, has officially been closed and is no longer in operation. The department, initially founded by Elon Musk in a cooperative effort with President Donald Trump, was created to help reduce government spending and remove inefficiencies.

DOGE was created by Donald Trump on his first day in office and has had a major impact on the federal government. The Department was created to fulfill his campaign promise of overhauling the government and cutting down on the federal budget.

On their website, according to their information, they have saved $1,329 for each American taxpayer with their cuts. However, over the course of the department’s operation, they were unable to fulfill their goal of cutting between $1 and $2 trillion from the federal government’s spending.

During the summer of 2025, Elon Musk and President Donald Trump had a falling out, and Elon left his position as the head of DOGE. This meant the DOGE did not have a central head for leading the department for months.

In a recent statement, it was announced that the Department of Government Efficiency no longer exists. The department itself has been closed, but the philosophy of the department still lives on in the federal government.

The current administration provided the following statement: “The truth is: DOGE may not have centralized leadership under @USDS. But, the principles of DOGE remain alive and well: de-regulation; eliminating fraud, waste and abuse; re-shaping the federal workforce; making efficiency a first class citizen; etc. DOGE catalyzed these changes; the agencies along with  @USOPM and @WHOMB will institutionalize them!”.

While the department has been closed, the drive to reduce government spending still lives on through other departments and federal workers associated with the department.
