Contemporary Hip Hop hasn’t had a high-profile collab album since November 2022, courtesy of Drake and 21 Savage’s album “Her Loss,” which went No. 1 on the Billboard charts that year. However, for the up-and-comers, an announcement has been made that has gained some traction.
Lyrical Lemonade announced the lineup for their Summer Smash event, which will take place from June 20th to June 22nd. Among the artists listed were Don Toliver and YEAT, grouped together. This was later confirmed by both artists’ respective Instagram accounts, further increasing the validity of the project. That being said, let’s break down what’s so interesting about this collaborative tape.
The Houston melodic crooner, AKA Donny Womack, has dropped his fourth studio album, “Hardstone Psycho,” on June 14th, 2024. Featuring artists such as Travis Scott, Charlie Wilson, Teezo Touchdown, Kodak Black, and others, the album continues his brand of trippy trap with anthemic energy and monster-fueled hooks. We’ll probably hear more of this side of Don in the album.
Portland-based rapper YEAT dropped two albums last year: “2093” and “LYFESTYLE.” With auto-tuned melodies spread over rage music production, the rapper proves to be different and inventive compared to most of his contemporaries. It’s possible that he’ll bring the aggressive, rhythmic side to the project.
Will it be released this year? We may never know, but the buildup has clearly been on the rise. Don Toliver and YEAT have appeared on both of their albums, so their chemistry should be on point. But for now, we need more concrete info and leaked snippets to understand what the collaborative album will sound like.
