Being able to drive a car is an absolute must for the world that we live in. Our society functions in this fast-paced manner of being needed in several locations daily, so operating a vehicle is a common trait that adults must be accustomed to. That being said, cars are hazardous if handled poorly, which is why the high number of crashes and near misses in America alone is enough to warrant some kind of response.
Getting a driving license has simply been far too easy for even the most reckless people. Not a day goes by without driving on the same roads as someone who doesn’t use their blinkers, ignores basic road laws, and does not have common sense. Mistakes are always bound to happen, but they should be most scarce when it comes to car safety, which is why there needs to be a change to better determine who is truly ready to get their license.
Initially, it seemed that the most logical solution to prevent accidents would be to raise the minimum age to get a license since young drivers are more prone to making mistakes. However, that action would not only punish the more responsible drivers out there but also provide less experience for the people who need it the most. The best solution would be to either stretch the test to further prove people’s knowledge and skills or to have some kind of reevaluation occasionally, to ensure that there is improvement in how drivers operate on the road. It might come as an inconvenience for people, but I would prefer it over worrying about the competence of every driver we share the road with.
